Let’s be honest – Waynesboro loves plants. We don’t just like them. We’re borderline obsessed. While one of our biggest plant based (I’m pretty pleased with myself for that one) events, the Shenandoah Valley Plant Symposium, has already happened this year, there is plenty more to come!

It doesn’t matter if you’re a Master Gardener with soil running through your veins, or someone who struggles to keep a snake plant alive (raises hand, I’m on my second one) and has already googled ‘why is my plant turning yellow’ for the third time this week, Waynesboro has a plant event for every skill level.

Carnivorous Terrarium Workshop – March 20, 6-7 pm at Orchard Creek

Tired of your houseplant just sitting there, expecting you to do all the work and contributing nothing to the household? Maybe it’s time to upgrade to something a little more… Audrey II-like. Build your own carnivorous terrarium – yes, we’re talking Venus flytraps and other little bitey plants that will take care of any insect problems you might be having. Side note: we have a Venus flytrap in our office, and that thing eats some flies.

Pot of Gold Flower Workshop – March 22, 1-2:30 pm at The Faded Poppy

If you’ve ever wanted to arrange flowers like a pro, or at the very least not make them look like you just shoved them in a vase and hoped for the best, you’re going to love this workshop. Hosted by The Faded Poppy, this hands-on event will give you all the best pro tips and techniques for creating gorgeous floral arrangements worthy of gracing your dining table or gifting to your bestie. Grab a friend, partner, or kiddo to spend the afternoon playing in flowers and sipping on mocktails from The Matriarchists.

Flower Starting Workshop – April 5, 11am at Waynesboro Landscape and Garden Center

You know what’s better than buying flowers? Growing them yourself and bragging about it! Gabby, the Horticulture Specialist at WLGC, will be sharing her expert tips to help you start the garden of your dreams and keep it going! Just buy a seed starting kit, which includes a Jiffy Self-Watering Greenhouse Kit with 34 peat pellets, a water-wicking mat, and the following flowers: Sensation Cosmos, Swamp Milkweed, Teddy Bear Sunflower, Zinnia Cut and Come Again, Bee Balm, and Echinacea Purple Coneflower, and register. This workshop is limited to 20, so claim your spot now!

Plant Grateful – April 19, 9 am–12 pm at Stone Soup Books

This isn’t just an event. It’s a movement. A lifestyle. It’s Plant Grateful, the festival that signals the start of the Farmers Market season, spring, and that it’s time to plant your garden. Gardeners and want-to-be gardeners can bring plants and seeds to swap or ask questions about. Local farmers will be setting up an early market for goods, medicinal herbs, honey, produce, crafts, and sweet treats. And, of course, BOOKS!

Waynesboro Farmers Market – Saturdays, May 10 to October 25, 9 am–1 pm at Constitution Park

This is where the real plant people thrive. Need fresh veggies? Plant? Herbs? Handmade cheese? An excuse to talk to strangers about composting? The Farmers Market has all that, and I have it on pretty good authority they’re going to be expanding some of their family friendly programming this year. Plus, adorn. boutique is sponsoring the market’s live music this year so that means local tunes every week! The Waynesboro Farmers Market has it all, and will leave you feeling pretty inwardly smug since you’re being an excellent human by supporting local farmers and small businesses.

The Waynesboro Public Library’s Seed Library

Look, checking out library books is great and all, but have you tried checking out seeds?? The Waynesboro Public Library doesn’t just fuel your brain, it fuels your garden too (and tons of other stuff, Waynesboro’s library has a ton of awesome programming for all ages, that is always free and open to the public. Seriously, public libraries are the best). Pick up some seeds, plant them, and then come back to donate some seeds from your new plants. Visit the library (that’s at 600 S Wayne Avenue, if you’re unfamiliar) for more info!

There you have it, plant people of Waynesboro! Raise carnivorous plant babies, learn how not to kill flowers, hoard seeds like they’re going to be the currency for the apocalypse – whatever you decide to do, go forth and plant!
